2019 Citrus Golf Croquet Doubles Classic
February 22–24, Palm Beach Polo & Country Club
Twenty four players, mostly from the West palm Beach area, Jacksonville and as far as Lake Forest, Illinois, came out to play in the inaugural Citrus Golf Croquet Doubles Classic. Play started promptly on Saturday morning at 9am and finished on Sunday afternoon around 3:30pm. The weather was great: warm, nice breeze and from time to time some well deserved cloud cover. That said players were always seeking chairs in the shade while drinking water as much as possible. In both flights bisques were given to the higher handicap players to even the playing field, which made it quite interesting and some of the top teams lost a game or two. The biggest upset in block play was Denise Delrusso and Caryl Firth beating the favorites Sandy Knuth and Vernon Pierce 7-6 while using their bisque on the tie break wicket.
However, Pierce and Knuth won their block with a 3-1 record. In the championship final it was once again Pierce and Knuth winning over the Chicago team of Steven Bent and Rod Workman 7-3. The Championship Plate was won by Kat Robertson and Jeanne Branthover over Priscilla Flowers and new comer Jack Schmidt 7-5. The Championship B Plate was won by Brad Martens and Mike Shad over Denise Delrusso and Caryl Firth 7-2. In setting up the playoffs most of the pairings were decided by net points. The only two teams who went directly into the playoffs were Vernon Pierce and Sandy Knuth, Priscilla Flowers and Jack Schmidt both with 3-1 records respectively.
I would like to thank the Palm Beach Polo staff for helping with another great event at the courts and the wonderful lunches in the club house. I would also like to thank Paul Hope for making the trophies for the event, two beautiful acrylic pieces and two coffee mugs with matching coasters. I would also like to thank the spectators who came out to watch. We look forward to seeing everyone for the next Citrus Classic tournament.
